Olfaction: It Makes a World of Scents
نویسنده
چکیده
Mutations in odorant receptor genes predict olfactory perception of common compounds in foods and flowers. Through recombination they can generate extensive combinatorial variation in sensory ability among individuals.

Olfaction: Smells Like Fly Food
Fruit flies love foods containing yeast. A new study now shows that they are attracted to and have dedicated olfactory neurons for detecting the scents produced by yeast metabolizing common phenolic compounds in fruit.
متن کاملHow incorporation of scents could enhance immersive virtual experiences
Under normal everyday conditions, senses all work together to create experiences that fill a typical person's life. Unfortunately for behavioral and cognitive researchers who investigate such experiences, standard laboratory tests are usually conducted in a nondescript room in front of a computer screen. They are very far from replicating the complexity of real world experiences. Recently, imme...
متن کاملOLFACTORY INTERACTION ( draft )
1 Introduction In a modern western culture dominated by visual and auditory perception, olfaction is commonly regarded as a minor sensory modality. Yet, scents are extremely evocative; they can also shift attention, add novelty, enhance mental state and add presence. And, as an ambient or peripheral medium [1], olfaction does not require manipulation or eye contact. This chapter explores the se...
متن کاملComparison of Olfactory Function before and After Endoscopic Sinus Surgery
Introduction: Olfactory loss in patients with chronic rhinosinusitis has been measured by different methods. However, the results have been variable, and it is not clear whether endoscopic sinus surgery significantly improves olfactory function. This study was performed to evaluate the influence of endoscopic sinus surgery on olfactory function in patients with chronic rhinosinusitis. Material...
متن کاملOlfaction: Scents and sensibility
Expression of a receptor protein has, for the first time, been definitively correlated with sensitivity to a particular odorant. This receptor, expressed in the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans, appears to be distinct from the putative vertebrate odorant receptors.
